How the calculation works

  1. Total estimated searches = keywords × average monthly search volume
  2. Expected visitors = total searches × visit %
  3. Conversions = expected visitors × conversion rate
  4. Monthly revenue = conversions × average sale value
  5. ROI = (monthly revenue − monthly SEO cost) ÷ monthly SEO cost × 100

Worked example. A D2C brand ranks 50 keywords at 300 searches each, so 15,000 searches. At a 15% visit rate that is 2,250 visitors. At 2.5% conversion that is 56 sales. At $120 each, monthly revenue is $6,750. If SEO costs $2,500 a month, ROI is 170%.

Conversions are shown as whole numbers, but revenue is calculated from the exact fractional figure so small inputs are not rounded away.

Frequently asked questions

What is ROI in SEO?

Return on investment: the revenue SEO brings in compared with what you spend on it, expressed as a percentage.

What if I don't know my conversion rate?

Check Google Analytics for the conversion rate of organic traffic. If you have no data yet, start with 1 to 3% and adjust once you have real numbers.

Where do I get the search volume?

Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, Semrush or Ubersuggest. Use the average across the keywords you rank for rather than your single biggest term.

Why is the visit % not 100%?

Only a share of searchers click any given result. Position 1 gets roughly 25 to 30% of clicks, position 5 about 5%, and position 10 under 2%. Use an average across your rankings.

Does this include brand searches?

Only if you include brand keywords in your count. Many people exclude them because that traffic would come anyway.

How is this different from paid ads ROI?

SEO cost is mostly fixed per month while traffic compounds over time. Paid ads stop the moment spend stops. This is why SEO ROI usually starts negative and grows.

Estimates only. Real results depend on ranking positions, seasonality and how well your pages convert.
